Janet has a degree
in Chemistry with Supplementary Biochemistry from Oxford University, and is a
Member of the Royal Society of Chemistry. After 2 years' IVS volunteer work
teaching science and maths in Lesotho, she joined Abel & Imray in 1972. She
has been a Partner since 1982, and became Deputy Senior Partner in 2008. She is
based in the firm's London office.
She specialises in pharmaceutical and agrochemical patents but also deals with
a variety of other chemical work, especially powder coating technology. She has
prosecuted applications relating, for example, to micro organisms and plant
biotechnology, and has advised major companies in the pharmaceutical and
biotechnology fields. She has been actively involved in major High Court cases,
including patent infringement litigation. Her specialist experience has also
included patent extension cases, involving detailed studies of the research and
development leading to successful pharmaceuticals, and work requiring
application of the principles of accountancy involved in arriving at royalty
rates in compulsory licences under patents for pharmaceuticals. She also
handles applications for Supplementary Protection Certificates for medicinal
and plant protection products.
